Ahoi und Moin direkt von der munteren Kaperfahrt! Mimi Barks, gebürtig in Bochum ist eine große Ausnahme im Musikbusiness. Ihren eigenen Musikstil bezeichnet sie als Doom-Trap, eine muntere Mischung aus Metal, Industrial, Hip-Hop und Harsh-Electro. Wer sich darunter nicht viel vorstellen kann, dem kann man nahe legen das sie schon auf Tour mit Combichrist, Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes oder Saint Agnes und auf diversen einschlägigen Festivals (u.a. Graspop, Download, Copenhell, Full Force, 2000 Trees) gespielt hat. Für Wacken 2025 wurde sie übrigens auch bestätigt. Wie auch immer.. am 26.09 bringt sie ihr Debüt-Album mit Namen „This Is Doom Trap“ raus und gibt uns Einblicke in eine ganz andere Art und Weise Musik zu interpretieren.

This is Fucking Doom-Trap

„FSU“ will euch gar nicht gefallen, sondern einen Einblick in das Schaffen einer Ausnahmekünstlerin geben. Neben elektronischen Beats, Screams und Rap-Einlagen wirkt es fast wie eine Neuinterpretation der ersten Combichrist Alben. „HOUSE FULL OF FAKES“ treibt düster vor sich hin, fast schon ein reiner Hip-Hop-Track mit tiefem Beat und Bass. Vielleicht nicht für jeden Metalhead etwas.. aber dafür gibt es dann ja auch mit „MIRTAZAPINE“ dick was auf die Ohren. Metalbeats, Rap-Vocals, Bass der das ganze untermalt. Es ist mitunter immernoch Gewöhnungsbedürftig, aber die Mischung zieht. „PSYCHOSIS“ ist wieder ein reiner und tiefenentspannter Song, ein Ruhepol bevor es mit „WORMGIRL Ft. Raven Gray“ extrem Basslastigen Metal um die Ohren gibt, gepaart mit elektronischen Beats und gut platzierten Screams. „MONTANA Ft. Yeti Bones Of Ho99o9“ wird dann wohl einer der Songs sein, wegen dem viele jetzt aufschreien werden und sagen das Mimi Barks nicht zu Wacken gehört oder zu einem Metalmagazin. Ja, der Song ist ein reiner Hip-Hop Track. Nein, ich werde nicht bezahlt dieses Review zu schreiben, aber dazu später mehr. Schlussendlich bietet euch „FADED“ nen erstklassiges Metal Intro, und eine interessante Art um Gitarren in den doch eigenwilligen Stil einzuarbeiten. Die stets präsenten Screams im Background könnten auch ebenso in einem Blackmetal-Album Anklang finden.

Kunst ist Freiheit!

„BANSHEE“ ist ein super Song um auch auf Festivals wie dem WGT oder Mera-Luna gespielt zu werden, und zeigt die musikalische Vielfalt der Künstlerin. Während es mit „SILENT TEARS“ wieder deutlich elektronischer wird und geschickt mit verschiedenen Genres gespielt wird. Von Rock bis Rap ist alles dabei. Auch „DISGUSTED“ baut auf das Prinzip der Diversität und führt euch wahrscheinlich näher an andere Genres heran als vielen lieb sein dürfte. „CARDIAC“ dreht dahingegen die Bassregler auf und treibt wieder entspannt vor sich hin, bereitet euch spielerisch auf „FINAL DESTINATION DEATH WITHOUT SATISFACTION“ und seine harten elektronischen Beats und starker Bearbeitung auch der Stimme vor. Bevor wir zu einem letzten Bonustrack kommen gibt es als großes Finale nochmal „INSOMNIAC“ um die Ohren. Eine Musikalische Mischung aus Rock, Elektronik und der sehr markanten und passenden Stimme der Frontfrau. Besagte Dame hat übrigens dem Album noch „BONUS TRACK – MONTANA (Mimi Solo)“ als Zugabe drauf gepackt, ein reiner Rapsong, der aber weder aufgesetzt noch dem typischen Gangster-Klischees entwachsen ist.

Fazit:

Als ich mir das Album zum ersten mal angehört hab war ich mir nicht mal sicher ob es etwas für unser Magazin ist. Die markanten Hip-Hop und Rap Einspieler, der markante Beat, all das würde schon von Haus aus gegen Mimi Barks sprechen. Was mich aber überzeugt hat waren zwei Dinge: Zum  einen die reine Qualität des Albums, und die Art und Weise mit welcher die Künstlerin ihren Weg brachial sucht. Das erfordert Eier die vielen Bands heutiger Zeit leider abgehen. Dadurch wirkt das gesamte Album nicht aufgesetzt oder künstlich. Und zum anderen bin ich dafür das Metal vielseitig genug ist, und stets im Wandel. Und für diese künstlerische Herangehensweise hat sich Mimi Barks stolze 5/6 Schädel für ihr Debütalbum verdient. Kauft euch das Album wenn ihr mal Bock auf ne neue Erfahrung habt, und wenn nicht, sind für 2025 auf jeden Fall ne Headliner-Tour geplant und auf Wacken könnt ihr sie auch sehen. Ich werde die Chance auf jeden Fall nutzen!

With electronic beats, screams, and rap inserts, it almost feels like a reinterpretation of the early Combichrist albums. „HOUSE FULL OF FAKES“ pushes forward with a dark vibe, almost like a pure hip-hop track with a deep beat and bass. It might not be every metalhead’s cup of tea, but there’s plenty of ear-blasting with „MIRTAZAPINE.“ Metal beats, rap vocals, and bass underlie the whole thing. It still takes some getting used to, but the mix works. „PSYCHOSIS“ is a relaxed, pure song, a moment of calm before „WORMGIRL Ft. Raven Gray“ hits you with extremely bass-heavy metal, paired with electronic beats and well-placed screams. „MONTANA Ft. Yeti Bones of Ho99o9“ is likely to be one of the tracks that makes people scream that Mimi Barks doesn’t belong at Wacken or in a metal magazine. Yes, the track is a pure hip-hop song. No, I’m not getting paid to write this review, but more on that later. Finally, „FADED“ gives you a top-class metal intro and an interesting way of integrating guitars into her unique style. The ever-present screams in the background could easily fit into a black metal album.

Art is Freedom!

„BANSHEE“ is a great song for festivals like WGT or M’era Luna and showcases the artist’s musical diversity. Meanwhile, „SILENT TEARS“ gets much more electronic again, cleverly blending different genres. From rock to rap, it’s all in there. „DISGUSTED“ also builds on the principle of diversity and will probably bring you closer to other genres than you might like. On the other hand, „CARDIAC“ cranks up the bass and pushes forward again in a laid-back manner, preparing you for „FINAL DESTINATION DEATH WITHOUT SATISFACTION“ with its hard electronic beats and heavy vocal processing. Before we get to the final bonus track, the album wraps up with the big finale of „INSOMNIAC,“ a musical mix of rock, electronics, and the distinctive, fitting voice of the frontwoman. Speaking of which, the lady herself added „BONUS TRACK – MONTANA (Mimi Solo)“ to the album as a little extra—a pure rap song that neither feels forced nor falls into typical gangster rap clichés.

Conclusion:

When I first listened to the album, I wasn’t sure if it was even something for our magazine. The distinct hip-hop and rap elements, the heavy beat—all of it would normally argue against Mimi Barks. But two things convinced me: first, the sheer quality of the album and the way the artist forcefully forges her own path. That takes guts, something many bands today sadly lack. As a result, the whole album doesn’t feel forced or artificial. And second, I believe metal is versatile enough to always evolve. For this artistic approach, Mimi Barks has earned a proud 5/6 skulls for her debut album. Get the album if you’re in the mood for a new experience, and if not, she’s planning a headliner tour in 2025, and you can catch her at Wacken. I’m definitely seizing the opportunity!
