Well done!
Ahoy, ye landlubbers! On Friday, February 16th, yer ol‘ Matey Messer Jack ventured into the northern capital of good music to catch TesseracT with the two support bands, The Callous Daoboys and Unprocessed. But afore things got properly underway, there was a thorough interview with James Monteith, the guitarist for TesseracT.“
Interview with James Monteith
Messer Jack: So tell me, how was your tour so far?
James Monteith: This Tour has been great for us. Every show has been really fun, the new materials were well received and we couldn’t be more happy.
Messer Jack: Thats cool! Did you expect to sell that much tickets? I have seen that you have some sold-out shows, including this one.
James Monteith: Ah yes, i guess we didn’t know what to expect coming into this. Well yes, you always hope for growing a bit and getting a bigger audience. We are very happy, very surprised about how many people turning up!
Messer Jack: I have seen that your Drummer is nominated for a Drumeo-Award, Does is affect your Band in some way?
James Monteith: No, not really.. i think its a lovely recognition for Jay. It’s a nice, kind of like, well-done sort of checkpoint. But it does not affect anything else really Its business as usually!
Messer Jack: Keeping in mind that people sometimes will get some more stuff do to, or requests for somethings, thats good to know! However i have also seen that you published a game on Steam. Did you expect this one to be this much appreciated? I have seen it has got very positive reviews, 92% last time i checked. Thats very good for Steam if you are a gamer like me.
James Monteith: Yeah, you played it?
Messer Jack: Not yet.
James Monteith; Yeah that. Yeah again, thats something that organically happened, and the version that’s available now is the early access version. So it’s just five levels. And thats been the money that was raised with that. The Kickstarter has been put into funding a full game, which i think is planned for 2025. So, yeah, i’ve won for the positive response. And Dan took the charge on that. That’s basically his baby. Yeah, he is running with it and very excited to make the full game next year and hope people are going to check that out as well.
Messer Jack: That’s really cool! I mean, i don’t know many bands which are doing this kind of stuff. Usually you’ve got merchandise like shirts, or CD’s and something like this. So thats refreshing. Just like your music. Some comments say that it’s difficult to listen to your music because its so uncommon. How do you feel about that yourseld?
James Monteith: Well, i mean, i suppose it’s not that conventional, but then i don’t think we want to play it like everyone else.
Messer Jack: It’s perfect, i mean you do very well, and you see this at your ticket sells too.
James Monteith: I guess some of the things we do rhythmically and so on, which people find strange, are less strange now than we first started doing them. And i think also if you look at bands, bigger bands that are blowing up that are taking influence from this stryle. Bands like Spiritbox or Sleep Token that are now very big bands. They’ve adopted a lot of the sort of sounds of this genre. So, i think over time people get more and more used to different approaches to rhythm. But maybe we’re extremely good at that.
Messer Jack: Yeah, it’s fine! Of course some people always say, if they think about your band that you are pioneers of the Djent-Genre.
James Monteith: I don’t think thats really much of a thing. It’s more like your own style. And i think we all came from that. I mean we all started on the Internet and this was the same sort of bands. But i think everyone that came from that has gone in their own different directions.
Messer Jack: So, it’s like you all have your own origin and everyone seperates after that?
James Monteith: Yeah, everyone’s branched.
Messer Jack: So tell me, you tour alot around the world, do you got any special moments from the past shows at this current tour? Is there something you really want to look back to?
James Monteith: To be hones, all the actual live shows themselves. Previously we’ve always had very kind of a sedate kind of crowd that all likes to watch. I guess with this record in post-COVID there’s a whole new younger audience there. Bringing a much more energetic kind of approach to it. I’m enjoying every show, just seeing everyone rocking out and having a good time rather than just standing and watching me play and looking to mistake something.
Messer Jack: So, now that you mentioned it, how did COVID affect your band?
James Monteith: We were very lucky because we had just finished the touring album cycle. So, it’s not like we had tours planned that were cancelled or stopped on the way through. We had some South America dates but we just moved those so that was fine. And then everyone was doing live strams, we did two Portals live stream which was accessible for us. So, in a weird way, that also brought us alot more time to work on the record. So, it’s strange where i think COVID worked to our advantage a little bit. Not one to brag about.
Messer Jack: I mean, most bands had some issues with recordings or live gigs or something like that. Glad you didnt had this kind of experience.
James Monteith: I think we were lucky with the timing but we also adapted to work within what we could do.
Messer Jack: So you were to the right place at the right time! Tell me, you have recently posted your tour dates for Asia, do you have any experiences from that area? Is the audience different from Germany or France maybe, or Spain?
James Monteith: I mean, we’ve never been to most of those countries. We’ve played India before, actually a few times. But we’ve never been to Japan, Singapore or Hong Kong. So, Yeah, i can’t answer that. But in terms of India, India has always been interesting. It’s always been very big shows and lots of enthusiasts. Alot more people. Great food too! I tend to find that where in the world you play. It doesn’t matter where you’re in the world. When you’re at a show, the people at every show are very similar to people anywhere in the world. Because they’re similar minded, you know, into similar things. So, yeah, it’s quite fascinating actually to be anywhere in the world. When you meet people, it’s kind of the same people.
Messer Jack: As we always say: It’s music. It’s all about music and no one cares if you are from Japan, Germany or Mexico. As long as you listen to the same fucking bands.
James Monteith: Yeah! So, i will say actually in Europe, there’s a nice difference. The people get more crazy in the south! So, the more on the north, they’re a little bit more reserved. It takes a little bit more to get the fuck out of it, but i think it’s because they used to be in cold. And that’s okay!
Messer Jack: Yeah, yeah, we are! I’m from northern Germany myself and can totally relate to that. So what is your favorite Country to play in?
James Monteith: I’ve enjoyed every country we’ve been in. There ’s not been one, one bad, not been one i’m sure that hasn’t been excellent and we haven’t had a good time, i think. I enjoy it all equally! I enjoy it to tour in Europe becuase every country is entirely different. You have to get in different food, different languages, different culture. So, yeah i can’t pick a favorite. It’s all been great!
Messer Jack: While we are at food, i have one special question for you. If you could invent any food or drink related to your band or yourself, what would it be and taste like?
James Monteith: I don’t know, i think food-wise, it would be tricky because we’ve all quite different ideas of what we would like to do. But then, acutally, i think it’d have to be drink-wise. It’d either be a very nice coffee or a full-bodied red wine, probably. You consider it for everyone’s taste. And it would be a mix of everyone. The common things that everyone likes.
Messer Jack: So is there anything you want to tell our audience? I have seen that you play a lot gigs in germany, what does it make so special for you?
James Monteith: Oh, Germany is a big place, i guess. (Laughs). I don’t know why. But i just want to thank everybody that’s come out, so we’ll show you today. German shows have been excellent. Even though, it’s not just Germany, but the Swiss show is even good. Switzerland is the hardest country. The’re them ost reserved. They are very reserved and they even sort of got loose in parts.
Messer Jack: How do i need to think about you on stage and the Swiss audience?
James Monteith: Well, normally, traditionally, they sort of stand there and be very well behaved. This time round, i guess we had that younger, enthusiastic audience that got much bigger for the beginning, so i was like, yeah.
Messer Jack: You will be surprised in Japan then though. I heard from some bands that they tend to stick to their place and listen.
James Monteith: Very polite, i’ve heard! So applaud at the end of the song and silence.
Messer Jack: Yeah, that’s a thing that can happen, dont need to maybe. But i hope you can enjoy your show either way!
James Monteith: I’m sure you know. I mean, we are used to that. That’s normally what we’ve traditionally had in front of, so.
Messer Jack: The final question: What can we expect from todays gig? Did you play in Hamburg already in the past?
James Monteith: Maybe. I feel like maybe i haven’t played here before. I can’t remember but this place feels familiar. If we did, it was five years ago. So, it was on our last tour. But yeah, i think. And the thing we’re really trying to do as well is put a bit more sort of drama and theatrics into the show. Nothing over the top, but just making the lightning very moddy and making the musicians between the songs as in what is the songs themselves in what you see visually and some of the sounds. So, expect like an immersive experience of Heavy Metal and visuals.
Messer Jack: So, if we take a look on past shows, the pictures you publish yourself or other recordings, you always try to improve. How do you feel about this?
James Monteith: 100%! And i feel like the stage show we’re doing now, we’re playing the same songs that we played in the USA and the end of last year. But the stage performance has improved significantly because when we’re playing in the USA we spent most of the time just making sure we could play it properly. So, now we’re a lot more confident in that respect. We’ve been facing a lot more of the digital aspects and how we perform and to be as engaging with the audience.
Messer Jack: As i always say: Music is Art, and yours is fucking cool. Thank you for your Time and the insights! And if you got some final question feel free!
James Monteith: No, not really. I think just, i guess i just put the message out there if we’re a new band to everybody or the readers, please to check out the new album „War of the Being“.
